Dr. Normund Akots is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice providing adult psychotherapy and diagnostic psychological and neuropsychological testing.
In addition to providing adult psychotherapy for the common problems of depression, anxiety, and relationship issues, Dr. Akots has areas of specialization in medical psychology. These include treating patients with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome and other disorders associated with stress and psychophysiological processes.
In the area of psychological and neuropsychological testing, it is often difficult to accurately diagnose some psychiatric and/or psychological conditions. It is important to accurately diagnose for treatment to be successful. Dr. Akots provides evaluations to resolve diagnostic questions. Testing is also important to identify many medical or neurological conditions such as identifying early onset dementia, adult ADHD, cognitive impairment post head injury or trauma, and other questions concerning cognitive and intellectual functioning or personality functioning.
An additional area of specialization is evaluation of patients prior to surgery or implantation of medical devices such as pain pumps and spinal cord stimulators. Dr. Akots can evaluate patients to rule out complicating psychological factors and inappropriate candidates who may have mental health issues.
Dr. Akots received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1988 and completed two years of postdoctoral training at the Menninger Clinic, where he specialized in diagnostic psychological testing and the treatment of severe personality disorders. He provided contract services to Providence St. Vincent Hospital for 10 years and functioned as the Clinical Supervisor of the Adult Psychiatric Unit for a majority of that time.
